Staff Sgt. Briand T. Williams dies from injuires in attack

The Department of Defense has announced the death of a Fort Benning soldier in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Briand T. Williams, 25, of Sparks, Ga., died Nov. 22, 2009, in Numaniyah, Iraq, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in September 2007. The 3rd HBCT deployed to Iraq in October.

Williams joined the Army in June 2002 and had three previous deployments.

He was promoted to staff sergeant about two weeks ago, according to Fort Benning public affairs.
