Political activist and radio talk show host the Rev. Al Sharpton will be in Phenix City today supporting former Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford, who is running against state Rep. Billy Beasley for Alabama senate District 28.

Last month's five-way Democratic primary for the seat failed to yield a candidate with a majority. Beasley and Ford are in a run off election where voters head to the polls Tuesday to make a decision.

Ford said Sharpton, who he described as an old friend, will join him in several get out the vote events including one in Phenix City at 5 p.m. Ford said they will gather at the Russell County Courthouse on Broad Street.

"He's been helping me all along," Ford said. "He endorsed me earlier in the year."

The Senate district covers Barbour, Bullock, Henry, Macon and parts of Lee and Russell counties.
