Troup County fugitive wanted on child molestation charges caught in Muncie, Ind.

William Alect Abernathy III — wanted in Troup County on six counts of aggravated child molestation — was recently caught in Muncie, Ind., a release states.

Sgt. Chad Mann with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office said deputies with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office spotted Abernathy, 40, late Sunday night.

“They were doing a training activity and it was pitch dark when they found him,” Mann added. “He was just walking around.”

The deputies asked if Abernathy was OK, and then ran his information through a national database. That’s when they discovered he had active warrants out of Indiana and Georgia, Mann said.

Abernathy faces DUI and drug charges in Indiana, a release states.

Authorities are working on extraditing Abernathy to Georgia.
