ATHENS, Ga. — The only known casualty of Georgia’s full-scale scrimmage was walk-on quarterback Greg Bingham. The scout-teamer from Columbus High suffered a concussion after rolling out and getting nailed by cornerback Vance Cuff.

“You don’t get to hit quarterbacks around here that much in practice,” Cuff said. “So when I got the chance I took what I could do.”

Cuff was smiling when he said that, but the play did have one tangible result.

“After that, we decided to go back to not making the quarterbacks live anymore,” coach Mark Richt said.

Owens ends career

Jonathan Owens, a reserve offensive lineman, is ending his football career because of chronic knee problems. Owens, a sophomore, played in one game last year and redshirted the previous season.

Georgia said Owens was granted a medical disqualification¸ which will allow it to use the scholarship.

Owens, from Blountsville, Ala., will undergo surgery Tuesday to re-align the patella in his right knee.

Up and downs

Both coordinators will be on the field during games. New defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will join his offensive counterpart Mike Bobo in calling plays from the sidelines.

Inside linebackers coach Warren Belin, secondary coach Scott Lakatos, receivers coach Tony Ball and tight ends coach John Lilly will be in the press box. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner, offensive line coach Stacy Searels and running backs coach Bryan McClendon will be on the field.

Captains named

The Bulldogs named their four captains for the opener: senior fullback Shaun Chappas on offense, Cuff and senior defensive end Demarcus Dobbs on defense and senior Fred Munzenmaier on special teams.
