TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The year and player both changed, but the issue remained consistent for the Alabama starting nose guard.

Battles with weight hurt Terrence Cody’s ability to stay fresh for an entire game the last two seasons. The same was almost true for his replacement Josh Chapman this fall, but the scale has yielded better results recently for the junior from Hoover.

Nowhere near the 354 pounds Cody reportedly played with in 2009, Chapman is closer to 305 heading into the first game week of 2010.

“I feel that I can pass rush better,” Chapman said. “That comes from getting my weight down. When my weight was high, I couldn’t go that long — couldn’t sustain that long.”

He’s still facing considerable competition from close friend and former high school teammate Kerry Murphy who was listed as the backup nose guard on the depth chart.

Coach Nick Saban said conditioning has been Murphy’s biggest issue, but that always seemed to improve as the year progressed. Both will play Saturday with Murphy seeing more action when the Tide moves to the nickel formation because he’s a better pass rusher, Saban said.

Pay-per-view details

UA released more details on the pay-per-view plan for Saturday’s San Jose State game.

The telecast will cost viewers $29.95 if ordered in advance or $34.95 if purchased on game day.

Direct TV, and Dish TV will carry the game on satellite as will most cable companies in Alabama, including Cable TV of East Alabama in Phenix City.
