Columbus State University's Department of History and Geography will hold a high-tech scavenger hunt using Global Positioning Systems devices on Sept. 7 in downtown Columbus.
The geocaching event is open to CSU students, faculty, staff and the community and will start at 6 p.m. It will cover downtown, parts of the historic district and the Riverwalk.
Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where participants use a GPS to hide and seek items or landmarks.
CSU will provide GPS units for each team at the event. The starting point of the game will be in front of the Yancey Center at One Arsenal Place in the university's downtown RiverPark campus. The hunt will last about 30 minutes.
The hunt will offer participants a chance to learn more about Columbus's history, CSU geography professor Tim Hawthorne said in a press release.
“The geocachers will explore a portion of the RiverWalk, stop at a local business or two, discover the location of CSU’s soon-to-be completed GIS lab and classroom space on the RiverPark campus, and examine a downtown building being considered for rezoning as a mixed-use space," he said.
