Rock Steady and the Hurricanes fought a defensive battle Aug. 25 during the preseason Commander’s Cup Flag Football tournament final at Essebagger Field with Rock Steady coming out on top to win the championship 7-0.

The Hurricanes, of MEDDAC, threatened to score in the final seconds of the first half, but Darryl Lewis, of Rock Steady, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, intercepted a Hurricanes’ pass to thwart the scoring opportunity to close out the half.

Rock Steady began the second half with a series of drives, which resulted in Rock Steady’s Andrew Rhinehart scoring the lone touchdown of the game, followed by a Rhinehart pass to Joseph Travis for the conversion to lead 7-0 and seal the win.

“I felt relieved when I got that touchdown because we were scoreless at the time,” Rhinehart said. “I was at the right place at the right time. We stayed scoreless for so long because both teams have really good defenses and because of that, we weren’t able to move the ball.”

Rock Steady coach Christopher Perkins said the win could have went either way.

“We went into the championship knowing it would be a hard, competitive game,” Perkins said. “It was a good game. Our defense stepped up and we were able to stop them before they scored.”

The 11th Engineer Battalion Team Two took third place in the preseason double-elimination tournament. The regular season will kick off Sept. 8 and continue until October.
