Kemet Preer, who graduated from Phenix City's Central High School in May, received the High School Jazz Musician of the Year award from the Columbus Jazz Society.

Kemet, the son of Pamela Preer of Phenix City, is a student of Central's band director, Roger Redden. Kemet plays alto saxophone and is planning to attend college to study music.

The purpose of this award is to encourage young musicians in to pursue jazz performance education and to recognize these students.

Besides this award, the Columbus Jazz Society gives an annual scholarship to a local college student student.

The society's monthly Jazz Jams are the second Sunday of the month from 6-9 p.m. in the Liberty Theatre.
