The Muscogee County Board of Elections and Registration on Thursday set the dates, place and time for two additional voting days prior to the Nov. 2 General Election.

An advance voting precinct will be open at the Columbus Public Library on two Saturdays, Oct. 9 and Oct. 23. The polling place will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday voting has been done in Georgia, most recently in Fulton County.

“You can decide to go to the Auburn football game or vote — that’s a big decision,” board member U.D. Roberts said.

That brings to 32 the number of days voters can cast ballots prior to Election Day. Advance voting begins on Sept. 20.

The Saturday voting days were approved by the U.S. Justice Department, Director of Elections and Registration Nancy Boren said.

The board also discussed the reduction of polling places to 28 from 48. To help reduce confusion, about 60,000 voters will be sent postcards in the next two weeks notifying them of changes in polling places, Boren said.

Three public hearings will be held to discuss the reduction in polling locations. One is set for Oct. 7 at the main library. The locations and times for the other two are being set. The other two will likely be held in September, one in North Columbus and the other in South Columbus.
