Lee County Coroner Bill Harris says an Auburn, Ala. woman ha died from injuries received in an automobile accident on Saturday.

Harris reported that 23-year-old Amanda Polston was declared brain dead Sunday at 9:50 a.m.

The cause of death, said Harris in a press release, was multiple blunt force injuries.

The accident occurred Saturday around 11:30 a.m. on Shug Jordan Parkway near the Wire Road Intersection.

Polston was a front seat passenger in a Pontiac Sunfire driven by 22-year-old Travis Bishop of Auburn.

Bishop was traveling east on Shug Jordan when he apparently veered into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a Toyota Sequoia almost head-on.

Polston had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Auburn Fire Department.

East Alabama Medical Center EMS as well as two helicopters responded to the scene. As Polston was about to be loaded onto the Lifesaver helicopter, her condition declined rapidly and she had to be taken by ground ambulance to EAMC and was placed in the intensive care unit.

Bishop was airlifted by AirEvac to Columbus Regional Hospital in critical condition.

The driver and passengers of the Sequoia were transported to EAMC for treatment. Their injuries are believed to be be non-life threatening.

Auburn police and the Lee County Coroner's Office are still investigating the case.
