TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Rob Ezell became somewhat of a celebrity after his impression of head coach Nick Saban was broadcast on ESPN a few weeks ago. Greg McElroy’s impersonation of offensive coordinator Jim McElwain won’t draw nearly the same buzz, but it gained the approval of one person qualified to judge.
When asked about seeing film of Julio Jones’ diving one-handed catch against San Jose State, McElroy said he hadn’t broken it down yet. But he did his best guess of how McElwain will react.
Pretending to hold a remote and staring off into the distance, McElroy took a reflective tone.
“Wow. Wow. I don’t know what else to tell you. Wow.”
Nearby the group of print reporters stood McElwain’s daughter JoHanna who works in UA’s media relations office.
She laughed and confirmed the accuracy of the impression.
There were no video recorders rolling to document this one, though, so this one won’t become the YouTube hit Ezell’s became.
Still talking
The acrobatic touchdown catch made by Julio Jones was still subject of plenty chatter Monday afternoon.
Typically shy around reporters, Jones was a little less bashful Monday.
I’ve made better catches in practice,” he said.
Really? How much better?
“I mean, the stuff I do out there in practice is amazing,” he said quietly.
“I shock myself sometimes.”
McElroy still put it high on his list of remarkable plays he witnessed.
“I mean, that’s about as special as I’ve seen,” he said. “Yeah, I don’t think I’ve seen a catch like that since I’ve been here and I’ve seen some really good catches and some really athletic plays, but that’s probably as good as they come whether in practice or game. You guys saw the tip of the iceberg right there.”
Still hoping
At Monday afternoon’s practice, linebacker Courtney Upshaw walked gingerly on the ankle he sprained Saturday against San Jose State.
“We’re hopeful that he’ll be able to practice tomorrow, even though he’ll be out on the field (Monday),” Saban said.
A new ankle injury not previously released involved starting right tackle D.J. Fluker.
Saban said Monday that it didn’t appear too serious at first, but the swelling didn’t go down as fast as they’d hoped and would have a limited practice Monday before returning today.
High prices
Alabama hosting Penn State may well be the premiere game on the national schedule Saturday, and ticket scalpers are letting the market dictate prices.
The cheapest seats on StubHub.com are located at the top corner of the new south end zone upper deck with a price tag of $190.
The other end of the spectrum — a single ticket on the lower level on the 50-yard line comes with an asking price of $1,500. Two tickets in the same section cost $890 a piece on Ticketliquidator.com.
