The 11- to 13-year-old Fort Benning Bengals fell to the Phenix City Titans 20-13 in a Columbus Youth Football home game Saturday at Doughboy Stadium.

The Titans got off to a quick start early in the first quarter with Tyler Jefferson scoring the first touchdown to lead 7-0.

On the third possession in the second quarter, Bengals’ quarterback B.J. Knight ran for 35 yards to set up the Bengals first and goal from the 6-yard line. On the next play, Knight hit Brandon McDuffie on a 6-yard scoring toss to tie the score 7-7 with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Titans’ Antavious Jackson answered with a touchdown run, breaking the stalemate and giving the Titans a 14-7 lead at the half.

In the second half, Knight scored from the 2-yard line for a Bengal touchdown. The extra point conversion failed, leaving the Bengals trailing 14-13.

John Broussard added a final touchdown for the Titans with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, sealing the win for the Titans, 20-13.

“When we came out, we were a little intimidated by the last game we played (against them),” Knight said. “In the end, some guys got tired and started to give up, but overall, we ran pretty hard.”

Coach Lee Obie said penalties, among other issues, killed any chance of a Bengals comeback.

“If I could get my defense to pursue, we could have held them more,” he said. Even though Bengals lost to the Titans, Obie said it was an improvement since the last time they played the team, which ended in an 18-0 Titans’ win.

With the loss, the Bengals finished the season at 6-2 and will head into the playoffs, which leads to a berth in the Peanut Bowl, as the No. 2 team in the division. The playoff schedule has yet to be determined.
