Nearly every small game hunting season remains open until the end of February and waterfowl hunting season remains open until the end of January. For season dates and bag limits, see MCoE Regulation 200-3, Table 10-1.

Feral swine and coyotes can be hunted with modern firearms until March 26, the beginning of turkey season. The landscape and habitats of Fort Benning provide ample opportunities for hunting these species.

With the additional benefit of fewer hunters in the woods, this time of year presents a great opportunity for sportsmen, both experienced and novice, to benefit from quality time afield without the hustle and bustle of others in the woods.

This time of year also provides an opportunity to get all of your gear and equipment from the hunting season organized and put away so you can find it next year.

If you still find yourself in aguish as hunting season comes to a close just keep in mind that turkey season is right around the corner and spring fishing season is looming on the horizon.

Season recap: Part 1 The Fort Benning Wounded Warrior and Disabled hunter program had its most productive season, facilitating more than 60 hunts with hunters harvesting 10 deer and 11 pigs. Eligible individuals interested in participating can still hunt feral swine until the beginning of turkey season. For more information, call the Conservation Branch at 706-544-7516.

This season the Cantonment Archery Hunt was expanded to increase participation and total deer harvest. The primary mission of this program is to reduce deer density in urban areas and therefore minimize the number of deer and vehicle collisions. The initiative was both safe and successful. More than 100 hunters qualified and a total of 47 deer and three pigs were harvested, twice as many as last season. This represents roughly a 35 percent reduction of the deer population and should be instrumental in achieving the objectives of the program, minimizing human and wildlife conflicts.

See next week’s edition for the second part of the season recap of 2010-2011 deer hunting season.
