Japan earthquake relief 2011: How to make a donation

Text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross.

It's the organization's standard method for receiving donations via text message. The Red Cross' website says donations "support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross."

That includes relief efforts in the aftermath of natural disasters like the massive earthquake in Japan.

The text message code has rapidly spread online. It's one of the most-searched terms on Twitter this afternoon.

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan today unleashed a major tsunami that killed at least 32 people.

The Associated Press reports that "a tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific, including areas as far away as South America, the entire U.S. West Coast, Canada and Alaska."
