A Columbus man was indicted Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and shoplifting, records state.

A July 27 shoplifting accusation led to the alleged assault on the officer by Curtis Turner, 29, according to Columbus Recorder’s Court testimony.

Records state that Turner took two 12-packs of Corona beer from the Money Back, 5757 Buena Vista Road, on July 27. Officer Mark Whaley was investigating the theft by a suspect driving a minivan on Aug. 4. He saw a minivan matching the description of the one the suspect had and approached.

That’s when the driver accelerated. Whaley said he got his left foot on a back bumper and slid off.
