NCAA tourney down to four

March Madness is coming to a close with one more weekend of tournament play before the championship matchup Monday.

To everyone’s surprise, there are no No. 1 teams remaining, nor for that matter, any No. 2 seeds left in the tournament. This is the first year since the inception of the tournament without a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Final Four.

The lone remaining No. 1 seed in the Southwest bracket, Kansas, was sent home Sunday after losing 71-61 to 11th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth. No. 2 Florida was sent back to the swamps Saturday in a 74-71 loss to No. 8 seed Butler in the Southeast bracket, and the final No. 2 team fell Sunday with fourth-seeded Kentucky eliminating North Carolina 76-69 in the East bracket. No. 3 seed Connecticut eked out a 65-63 win over No. 5 Arizona to advance to the Final Four.

On Saturday, the field of four will be narrowed down to two as VCU takes on Butler and Kentucky takes on Connecticut. Both games will be televised on CBS beginning at 6 p.m.

Harvick wins at Fontana

With two laps remaining Sunday at Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway Jimmie Johnson passed Kyle Busch for the lead and it appeared Johnson and Busch would battle all the way to the checkers — Kevin Harvick had other ideas.

While Harvick is not known to be the type of driver who gets the lead and holds on to it for a long time, he is known as one of the better closers on the circuit. Harvick passed Busch on the final lap and went nose to bumper with Johnson on the final lap before passing him in the final turn to win the race.

The win at Fontana was Harvick’s first of the season. The win moved Harvick into a tie for ninth in the points standings with Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne.

Rounding out the top 10 were Johnson in second, Busch in third, Kenseth fourth, Ryan Newman fifth, Carl Edwards in sixth, Clint Bowyer seventh, Brian Vickers eighth, Kahne in ninth and Juan Pablo Montoya in 10th.

Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway will be televised at 1 p.m. on Fox.
