Columbus welcomes full-service spa for men

Van Dykes for Men, 12 West 11th St., is scheduled to start serving customers 9 a.m. Saturday. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Walk-ins are OK, but appointments are recommended. Call 706-507-1122.

There’s now a downtown hot spot where I can’t party, regardless of the shortness of my skirt or the power of my press pass.

I’m jealous.

Welcome to Van Dykes for Men, a new full-service spa where no girls are allowed. Well, in most cases. Interviews are an exception.

“I wanted to offer something that nobody else was offering. This is something unique and different,” said owner Rob Folk.

He’s right. There’s no shortage of uniqueness in the space, which sits near Old Siam in downtown Columbus. It’s scheduled to start serving customers on Saturday.

Curious about the spa’s name? A Van Dyke is a style of facial hair.

Among the available services: haircuts, massages, straight-razor shaves and more. Join a members’ club and you’ll have access to bonuses like a members’ lounge.

What’s missing?

You likely won’t hear references to a dreaded “A” word: aromatherapy. There are no candles. Or pink fluffy robes. Or cuddly clusters of potpourri.

“What man cave do you see that has plants and candles?” Folk asked.

Valid question.

Van Dykes for Men arrives in Columbus at a time when man cave occupancy isn’t contingent on nasty toenails. Folk throws the term “man cave” around often while discussing his venue -- suggesting manliness and manicures hardly exist in direct opposition.

“There’s a niche out there,” said Folk, who hopes to see a customer base that includes military clients.

The term “metrosexual” seems to be losing some of its luster -- and, in turn, some of its stigma.

Peruse a local nail salon and you’ll likely find a man getting a pedicure.

His discomfort over the Kardashian-dominated magazine selection likely outweighs any embarrassment surrounding foot care.

Don’t worry, Folk promises better reading selections at Van Dykes for Men, where haircuts cost $20-$25 on average.

If the local spa for men takes off, it might erase a common relationship tendency to believe female primping alone causes date night delays.

I’ll never forget a female friend’s answer when I asked why her date was running late: “He’s doing his hair.” A change is gonna come, daters. Trust me.

As Van Dykes for Men opens its doors to customers, I’ll remain a little envious of the boys-only club. Fortunately, curing my jealousy is easy.

I’ll sit at home and savor my potpourri -- a new aromatherapy inspired by the sweet satisfaction of believing my boyfriend could finally abandon his Hobbit-inspired feet.
