A Sunday afternoon blaze on Canterbury Drive in Columbus caused thousands of dollars in damage to the home and took the life of a pet, authorities said.

Columbus Fire & EMS responded to the fire at 6203 Canterbury Drive around 5 p.m. Battalion Chief Terry Herring said smoke could be seen a mile away from the blaze near Heath Park. Three adults with two dogs were standing in the street when firefighters arrived. One of their pet cats was unaccounted for. The other was found inside the home -- a victim of the fire, the chief said.

"They were watching the Nascar race," Herring said. "They didn't know the house was on fire. They just heard crackling and popping."

At some point, someone went to the garage and saw that entire portion of the house in flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though Herring said the blaze began in the garage. From there, it entered the attic and traveled across the house from above. It took firefighters an hour to bring the fire under control.

At least $100,000 in damage was done to the home, Herring said.

The battalion chief said two firefighters had minor blisters, though no one required medical treatment.

The home's residents told firefighters that they had family in the area they could stay with, Herring said.
