Six captains earned Army Achievement Medals Friday at Briant Wells Fieldhouse, where the Manuever Captains Career Course held a Modern Army Combatives Tournament for Class 1-11.
The tournament consisted of six weight classes.
Chi Min won the lightweight class, Scott Drenzek won the welterweight, Jared Pollock took the middleweight, Andy Bauder took the cruiserweight, Thaddeus Hickman won the light heavyweight and Chris Haskell took the heavyweight.
Bauder and Drenzek became Level 2 certified within the last week.
Drenzek, participating in his first combatives tournament, became Level 2-certified the day before the tournament.
Its nice to be able to use what Ive been learning the last couple of months, Drenzek said.
Drenzek had moments in his final match where he had to escape and counter the grasp of his opponent.
I had to get out of the guillotine, he said. He had me pretty good. I think another 30 seconds and I wouldve ended up tapping. I definitely gave it everything I had in the final fight.
Bauder said he was able to maintain an advantage in position throughout his match, but a chokehold counter gave him trouble.
He got me with a choke, but I was in dominant position so I was able to push him away, Bauder said.
Fridays tournament was also Bauders first. Though many who do well in combatives have a background in wrestling or boxing, Bauder said he never wrestled in high school.
I just did what they trained me to do, he said. I just stuck to the moves.
Bauder won his final match by points, 21-3, while Drenzek won by submission.
I got a good mount and posture on him, Drenzek said. I was able to get my arm underneath his head and finish the submission.
Min, Pollock, Hickman and Haskell also won via submission.
Each winner will receive recognition with Army Achievement Medals at their graduation Thursday.
