The Columbus youth advisory council is encouraging teens to put a ring on it this weekend.
The council is hosting a teen summit on teen relationships on Friday at the Columbus Civic Center. The summit -- Put on a Ring on It -- will focus on waiting until marriage to have sex, said Jami Mack, an 11th-grade advisor for the council.
The free event is directed toward middle and high school students and will feature music, skits, giveaways and guest speaker Shelly Donahue.
Donahue is the co-creator of WAIT (Why Am I Tempted?) Training, an abstinence and relationship curriculum for public schools. The program teaches teens about how to build respectful healthy relationships, ways to say no to sexual activity and other temptations and how to return to abstinence after being sexually active.
Mack said the summit will also present information about teen pregnancy and the risks of sexually transmitted diseases. Parents are encouraged to come to the summit as well.
He said this is the first year the council decided to have a summit focusing on teen relationships, but theyve seen some interest in the event already.
This is the first year weve done this on this scale, but weve gotten a pretty good response, Mack said.
Registration for the summit begins at 5 p.m. at the Civic Center and the event starts at 6 p.m.
