Theres a fresh patch of ice in Columbus.
The Columbus Ice Rink is the newest addition to the South Commons Sports Complex, joining Golden Park, the Softball Complex, Columbus Civic Center and Skateboard Park. A grand opening celebration for the $6 million facility took place April 29.
We wanted to provide the citizens an opportunity to have a facility dedicated to recreational skating, hockey, figure skating and more, said Lisa Goodwin, deputy city manager and interim director of the Columbus Civic Center. There was a need identified a few years ago and as a result of having to turn so many groups and individuals away at the Civic Center who wanted and needed ice time, we realized that it was time to construct a second sheet of ice.
The Columbus Ice Rink spans 38,122 square feet with a single NHL regulation-sized ice surface measuring 200 feet by 85 feet, according to a city news release. The multiuse facility seats more than 700 people comfortably with a maximum capacity of 1,440 if the ice deck is covered.
Goodwin said it features a state-of-the-art Bose Sound System, private VIP area overlooking the rink, spacious lobby, pro shop and snack bar. Tricommunity residents regardless of skill level can participate in year-round programs such as public skating, hockey and figure skating.
This provides another venue for citizens and visitors to have yet another entertainment and recreational opportunity, one that is year-round that will provide something for people of all skating levels, from first timers all the way to pro skaters, she said.
