Unbeaten and untied, the Fort Benning Black Knights under-12 youth soccer team continued on its winning path with a 3-1 win May 1 over the Eagles in the season-ending Columbus Youth Soccer Tournament at Woodruff Farms Soccer Complex.

Black Knights defender Callie Donohue said she realized her team would win after it scored the second goal. “We had only scored one and then (the Eagles) had scored one and that got me frantic,” Donohue said. “And then when we scored another (goal), I was relieved and that’s when I was like ‘all right, all right we can win this’ because I’m not going to have another ball passed.”

It turned out the second goal was really the third score that helped the team win the game.

Although the team finished the season undefeated, Donohue said she thought her team had really improved in passing the ball and using their bodies, not just their feet, to move the ball.

“Our team — it’s almost like we have inner thoughts to each other because we don’t really talk to each other; we just know when we are going to pass (the ball) to each other,” Donohue said.

Black Knights coach Tanner Helmers said the closest call they had was during the championship. The team was 8-0 during the season and allowed only four goals.

Helmers attributed the lack of scoring against the team to goalie Matthew Downing, whom he said played phenomenally throughout the entire season.
