Dizzy Reed has heard his share of Guns N Roses cover songs.
If someone has a real cool version of a Guns song, thats awesome, says Reed, the keyboard player for Guns N Roses. But, since hes also played his share of cover songs (He favored the Rolling Stones growing up), he has some advice for bands planning on tackling November Rain or Sweet Child o Mine. -- put your own twist on it and make sure its awesome.
If youre going to pick a cover song, you should be able to play it good, he said. It better be as good or better than the original version.
Reed will play songs from his upcoming CD at Spicolis on Friday, as well as some cover songs. He likes to keep the songs a surprise, but said the bands sound is kind of groovy, funky, bluesy, jazzy, metal R & B.
Hes spent the past year touring with GNR, promoting their album, Chinese Democracy. He said it was cool to see parents show up to concerts with their kids and introduce them to Guns N Roses songs.
Its a good sign that rock n roll has a chance to survive, he said.
Reed said GNR songs are difficult to play without the other band members, but if the crowd at Spicolis demands it, he may comply.
We may do a few Guns N Roses songs. If everyone is asking for it, we might play something, he said.
Tickets are $10. The opening act, Pistol Town, will start around 9 p.m. and Reed will play around 11 p.m.
