Liberty Pool will not open this summer

The historic Liberty Pool at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park will not open this year due to lack of money to operate it, according to Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

“It is a historic pool,” said Becky Kelley, director of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. “We will always recognize that and keep it in good shape. We are not in a position to operate it.”

The state parks and historic sites faced budget cuts and are currently finding ways to move away from state funded support, said Kim Hatcher, of the DNR public affairs office.

Kelley said all the parks and historic sites “are moving toward greatest self-sufficiency as possible.”

FDR State Park, along with all of the other state parks and historic sites are evaluating budgets and programs, Kelley said.

But the primary focus right now is recovering from the April 27 tornado which hit FDR State Park particularly hard.

“Everything is back up and running,” Kelley said. “The rest of the park is OK; the group camp is not.

“But you can still camp and hike. Come camp with us. We hope to have a full-service park available for the public in the future.”

Kelley said FDR State Park is a “great asset close to home. There are lots of great things to do there.”
