Don’t want to work? Just wanna bang on the drum all day? Here’s your chance.

The Art of Yoga studio is hosting the first Summer Solstice Drum Circle at 9 a.m. Saturday in downtown Columbus. Summer Solstice is a celebration of summer, which officially began on Tuesday, June 21.

“It’s a spontaneous Saturday event,” Tammy McGee, the marketing director and a teacher for the yoga studio, said of the drum circle. “A group of people gather with instruments and play.” McGee said drum circles are usually limited to percussion instruments, but for the first circle, they aren’t imposing any restrictions.

“We’re inviting any and all musicians,” she said. “You can bring a pan with a wooden spoon if you want.”

Musicians will gather on Broadway in the median between 10th and 11th streets. If you’re worried about losing the beat, there will be musicians from Columbus In-Home Music there to lead the group. McGee said people often dance at drum circles, too.

Participating or listening to the drum circle is free, but donations are welcome. McGee said they hope to bring awareness to West Central hospital and all donations will go to the American Red Cross.

After the drum circle, there will be a yoga class from 10:30 to 11:30. McGee said it will cover basic yoga poses that anyone with an average range of motion can do. The class is $5 and participants should bring their own mat.
