Two Columbus bars will celebrate milestones this weekend.
Duffys, a new bar off Warm Springs Road, is hosting its grand opening celebration, while MixUltra, a club on Broadway, will mark its one-year anniversary.
Duffys fills the space formerly occupied by the Shanty Shack and has an Irish theme, said manager John Jackson.
Its been completely redone on the inside, he said. They came in and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Its green now.
The bars new owner, Steve Toms, said the name was a friends idea.
A friend of mine named it and said it was short and sweet, he said.
Toms and Jackson said they hope to cater to an older crowd of partiers, ages 30 and above, with an atmosphere similar to Muldoons, a now-closed north Columbus bar.
Its homey, Toms said. People come in and say how comfortable it is in there and down to earth.
The bar is open Monday through Saturday, from 3 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Specials include free wings with a drink purchase from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays; poker on Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays and live entertainment on the weekends. Recent acts include Haywire and David McBride.
This weekends grand opening will feature drink specials, giveaways and a free Irish whiskey tasting on Saturday at 7 p.m. Mindblender will play Friday and Saturday, starting at 9 p.m. The cover charge is $5.
If youd rather head downtown this weekend, check out MixUltras one-year anniversary party. The club on Broadway recently expanded its offerings, adding a food and drink menu that includes items like skinny martinis, spring rolls, chicken yakatori and sushi. Specials at the non-smoking dance club include dollar sushi and dollar cosmos from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and karaoke Wednesday and Thursday with no cover charge. Theres also the music video lounge, where you can check out mixes from the clubs owner DJ Roonie G or DJ Alvin D.
The one-year anniversary festivities began Wednesday, with Ladies Night and continue through the weekend.
Clubbers who wear a little black dress on Thursday get in free and get the chance to win $200 in a best dressed contest. Friday, the club will host its first annual Glow Party, complete with glow-in-the-dark party favors and a black light. Saturdays grand finale will include stilt-walkers, jugglers, go-go dancers and a $1,000 balloon drop.
The cover charge ranges from $5 to $10. To reserve a V.I.P. table, call 706-221-2112.
