Amid the Army’s plan to move the U.S. Armor School from Fort Knox, Ky., the U.S. Marines also have found a new home at Fort Benning.

“The Marines have landed, and the situation is well in hand,” Lt. Col. Michael Muller, commander of the Marine Corps Detchment, said Thursday during a ceremony uncasing its flags at Brave Rifles Field. “We are glad to be here.”

The event at Harmony Church signaled the arrival of the Marines on post after a 40-year history at Fort Knox. As part of Base Realignment and Closure, moving the detachment 500 miles means 350 Marines will serve on post on any given day, Muller said.

“If there is a Marine training on this base, they are ours,” he said.

In addition to training at the Armor School, Marines also will be at Fort Benning for airborne and other specialized training.

“We basically manage all the Marine tank schools and all the special skills training for the Marine Corps,” the commander said.

Master Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Graham spent eight months at Fort Knox before making the move to Fort Benning. Moving was a challenge but it’s good for the detachment, he said.

“It’s a good move for the Marine Corps,” he said. “It’s a good move for us.”
