The big rail shipment of armored equipment from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning is almost complete, a post official said Tuesday.

On Thursday, the third and final rail shipment will deliver 39 vehicles including Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Stryker vehicles to the Ochille Railhead on post.

The armored equipment is part of the Base Realignment and Closure process to move the U.S. Armor School from Fort Knox to Fort Benning, creating the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

A crew of about 82 civilian and military personnel will unload the 17 rail cars and drivers will transport the armored vehicles less than two miles to motor pools on Harmony Church. When Thursday’s load arrives, 90 percent of the Fort Knox equipment will be at its new home.

By the end of this month, 26 trucks will deliver the last 63 pieces of wheeled equipment from the post 500 miles away.

To date, more than 48 million pounds of equipment have been relocated from Fort Knox using 775 commercial trucks and 105 rail cars.

During two earlier rail shipments from Fort Knox, the post received more than 130 armored vehicles. The largest shipment was on June 21 with 70 pieces of equipment.

The Base Realignment and Closure process requires that the Armor School’s move from Fort Knox is completed by Sept. 15.

All equipment will be used by the 194th Armored Brigade and the 316th Cavalry Brigade, the main training units of the school headquartered at Harmony Church.
