I suppose its time for an update on my crazy kickball adventures.
Sure, I could conveniently forget to recap my journey into the world of adult kickball, which I first announced in this column nearly two months ago.
But if I did that, you wouldnt hear about all my athletic accomplishments this season.
Like getting to base a whopping two times during the seven-game regular season. Or boasting outfield abilities strong enough to secure playing time in every other inning.
See, arent you glad you asked?
This summer, I signed up for GOkickball, Columbus adult kickball league. The co-ed league is open to people 21 and older.
I registered despite an embarrassing level of coordination and painful P.E. memories.
Heres the part where Im supposed to tell you how I overcame my fears, excelled on the field and developed a newfound passion for healthy competition.
Sorry, not gonna happen.
I still dont have enough upper body strength to throw a red ball with one arm, but I dont regret the time I spent on the 29th Street fields of dreams.
I got to experience the thrill of being on a team -- something I hadnt savored since my days of college speech competitions.
Through weekly practices and games, I enjoyed cheering from the dugout and joining my teammates in shouting thats what Im talking about, even when I had no idea what they were talking about.
While I only had two successful trips to first base -- nowhere beyond that, either -- I think the kickball season had some exercise benefits, too.
I worked muscles that are apparently under-utilized in my standard workout routine. After our first game, I proudly joined the real athletes who exert themselves to a level that requires ice packs.
The bruise I got after tripping over the ball during practice falls into a less honorable category.
I joined a kickball team largely because I knew I wouldnt immediately excel at the activity. In fact, I knew there was a good chance Id never excel at the activity.
Looks like I dont have to retract that prediction.
Nonetheless, Im sticking with my assertion that theres value in doing activities that dont guarantee victory.
Amid athletic milestones and professional achievements, theres a talent few of us have mastered: an ability to say I lost.
If nothing else, the kickball cleats gave my shoe rack some much-needed diversity.
Jealous? Registration is under way for the fall GOkickball season, which starts Sept. 15. Cost is $49 per player and includes a team T-shirt.
You can sign up individually or with friends.
