SAVANNAH, Ga. — A construction control inspector for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, died Saturday as a result of an accident at a road construction site on Fort Benning.

Jessie L. Allen was struck by a dump truck near the intersection of Dixie Road and 1st Division Road Saturday afternoon. He was taken to the Martin Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Allen, who had worked for the Corps of Engineers for four years, was inspecting a project that will expand Dixie Road from two lanes to four lanes when the accident occurred. A panel of safety experts has begun an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jessie Allen’s family and friends,” said Col. Jeff Hall, Savannah District commander. “The loss of one of our own members is especially tragic which reminds us of the inherent dangers of our business and the importance of safety for all our workers.”
