Congratulations to the Troup High School’s Career, Technology, Agriculture Education Department and specifically the Agricultural Mechanics program, on achieving industry-certification.

Mr. Mike Riley, the Agricultural Mechanics teacher, hosted a visiting team of industry professionals on Aug. 23 who determined the program and facilities met industry standard. Attaining this status makes the Agricultural Mechanics program the fifth industry-certified program at Troup High School. Additionally, Troup High School is the first Agricultural Mechanics program in Georgia to become industry certified, making Troup High’s program the benchmark program against which all other applying programs will be compared. Riley and Troup High School’s Agricultural Mechanics program will be formally recognized at the January 2012 conference of the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers’ Association.

Celebrating BRAC’s completion

Fort Benning’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation is planning a celebration to mark the end of the Base Realignment and Closure process that brought us the Maneuver Center of Excellence and the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the Army’s mightiest fighting forces, the Infantry and Armor.

“BRAC: To the Future” will be held Friday, Sept. 23, 1-9:30 p.m. on York Field in front of the newly renovated MCoE Headquarters (Building 4).

This event will combine all the best elements of an open house and a street fair. It will be fun and informative. It is free to the Fort Benning community -- the soldiers, family members and Department of Army civilians who live on post and across the Chattahoochee Valley. I Love Library Award

Nominations are now open for the 2011 Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love Librarian Award.

The award invites library users nationwide to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations are being accepted online at atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian through Sept. 12.

Up to 10 librarians will be selected. Each will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception in New York in December.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master’s degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two-or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

Community reunion

The annual Elizabeth Canty, Marshallville, Cusseta Road Community Reunion will be held Labor Day weekend with a cookout Saturday at Cooper Creek Park and church service at St. Paul A.M.E. Church on St. Mary’s Road.
