ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia coach Mark Richt apparently has heard the talk that he’s been too calm amid the team’s struggles. During his Wednesday post-practice media session, a reporter asked him if his approach after the game was to be encouraging or positive, or had he reached a point where he wanted to throw chairs and light a fire under his players.

“Does everybody want me to snap? Is that what they want? You all want to see me snap, is that what it is?” Richt said “Well we don’t discuss what happens in the locker room. But if you guys want to see me throw a table or something, I’ll do that, and smash a camera, if that makes everybody feel better.”

The embattled coach also seemed exasperated by the repeated questions about the importance of Saturday’s game. He was asked Tuesday at his weekly news conference about it being a “must-win,” and then heard it again in a variety of ways on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference. A reporter asked Richt on the teleconference if a loss would result in him feeling more pressure, and Richt laughed.

“We’re just coaching ball, OK? You guys want to make some things bigger than they are,” he said. “The bottom-line, it’s like anybody in life, you’ve got to control what you can, and that is my attitude and my effort and our team’s attitude and effort. That’s true every season. Today is no different than a year ago or two years ago going into Game 2 in my mind.”

Crowell vs. Lattimore?

The two tailbacks were one year apart, but similar in recruiting history. Marcus Lattimore was the focus of South Carolina’s efforts before signing day in 2010, and Isaiah Crowell was the same for Georgia this year.

Now the two will meet on the field for the first time. Crowell said he hadn’t heard much about the comparison between the two.

“I didn’t really hear too much about it,” Crowell said. “But I know he’s a great running back. I wish him the best. I’m just trying to help my team win.”

Lattimore had his national coming-out party against Georgia last year, gaining 182 yards on 37 carries. Crowell was asked about that potential workload for himself.

“I’d like to get that many carries,” Crowell said, smiling. “But that’s up to the coaches too.”

Not on the field

Ray Drew was the Georgia football team’s most hyped freshman recruit, and leading up to the opener coaches said the outside linebacker would definitely play.

So it was a surprise when Drew didn’t see the field in the loss to No. 5 Boise State.

But not a disappointment, the Thomasville, Ga., native said on Wednesday.

“I wasn’t disappointed at all. I’m just grateful to be in the position that I’m in,” Drew said. “I have the mindset that I’m in my first year. I’m going to do everything I can to show the coaches that I’m ready. But until he decides to make his move, I’m going to be satisfied with what he does, because this is the beginning of a long career here.”

Drew said his practice snaps have increased this week, and he’s been told to be ready to play. He’s been working behind junior Cornelius Washington at the team’s “Will” outside linebacker spot.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham also indicated that Drew would play. But he has a ways to go to displace Washington, even though Washington didn’t get credit for a tackle.

“Truthfully, Cornelius probably had his best game since I’ve been here,” Grantham said.

“As far as just being consistent and doing everything that we ask him to do.”
