The ultimate sacrifice: 128 soldiers from Fort Benning units killed in war on terror

Fort Benning has played a major role in the war on terrorism. The nation has lost 4,475 soldiers in Iraq and 1,746 in Afghanistan. Units at Fort Benning have lost 128 soldiers in the war.

The 75th Ranger Regiment, which includes 3rd Battalion and Regimental Special Troops Battalion at Fort Benning, the 1st Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah and 2nd Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Wash., lost 37 Rangers in Afghanistan and 19 in Iraq since Oct. 19, 2001, records from the battalion show.

The 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, one of the most deployed combat teams in the Army, has been deployed four times to Iraq since 2001. The brigade lost 72 soldiers in helping to secure the country and pave the way for parliamentary elections in March 2010.
