Columbus police: Undercover officer busts 1 in prostitution sting

Published: October 23, 2011

Columbus police charged a woman with prostitution after an undercover officer arranged to meet her at a hotel Friday evening.

Vera Nero, 22, is accused of making a sex-for-money offer to Sgt. Bill Gasaway around 6:30 p.m. at the Columbus Inn, 3170 Victory Drive. She’s since made bond, Muscogee County Jail records state.

Gasaway’s recently received complaints about online prostitution, and he found an ad on a website Friday afternoon. He called the number on the ad and spoke with Nero, asking if she’d meet him at the hotel, Gasaway said.

“She said she’d meet me over there or she agreed to meet me over there,” the sergeant added.

Gasaway said he was in Room 202 when Nero arrived. The conversation quickly turned sexual, and she agreed to have sex for $150 an hour.

“She wasn’t in the room a minute, probably,” Gasaway said.

Other officers then entered the room and arrested Nero without incident, he added.
