Columbus police are investigating what they’re calling the murder-suicide of an Army couple at their St. Marys Road apartment Saturday night.

Ruby Grant, 21, and Freddie Dewayne Grant, 27, were found fatally shot about 7 p.m. inside their home at Huckleberry Hill Apartments, 4570 St. Marys Road. According to a police report, officers visited the complex to conduct “a welfare check” of the couple. One neighbor said officers were also looking for a little girl who had been spotted outside the apartments.

When police stepped inside the couple’s apartment, they found the bodies, authorities said.

“When they got there is when they found the victim,” Sgt. Matt Blackstock said. “When they investigated, they found the other victim.”

Reports indicate Freddie Grant shot his wife in the head in their bedroom around 6:45 p.m. He then shot himself in the head in the same room. There is no suicide note.

Stephanie Barley, who lives in the same apartment building as the Grants, returned from work around 7 p.m. Saturday.

“I came home to a cop already here,” she said. “He asked if we had seen the little girl sitting outside at all. ... The cop said when he knocked on (the Grant’s) door, the door opened.”

The girl’s relationship to the Grants is unknown.

One man who lives in the building said he heard nothing at the time of the shooting. He saw nothing outside the apartment when he left around 11 p.m. or when he returned two hours later. No officer spoke to him, he said.

Police declined to release further details.

The Grants have been in the Columbus area since at least 2008. They moved to Huckleberry Hill Apartments about two months ago, records state.

Autopsies for both Grants are scheduled for Tuesday. Authorities hope to have preliminary results by that evening, said Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower.
