LSU ready to fight for national title

ATLANTA -- LSU coach Les Miles spent the week of this SEC Championship Game insisting that his team was focused on Georgia and not on a possible rematch with Alabama in the BCS national championship game.

The top-ranked Tigers might turn their attention to the Crimson Tide now.

By virtue of blowing out No. 12 Georgia 42-10 in the Georgia Dome on Saturday, LSU punched its ticket to the national-title game. With Alabama ranked No. 2 in the BCS, LSU may have to reprise its toughest win of the season on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

LSU (13-0) edged past Alabama 9-6 in overtime in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 5.

“It really doesn’t matter who’s there,” LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson said. “Whoever’s there, whoever’s ready for the challenge, we’re going to be there and ready to compete.”

Only one thing stands in the way of a rematch.

If voters in the USA Today/Coaches Poll and the Harris Poll decide that they don’t want to see a rematch of two SEC teams in the title game, a huge swing in votes could push another team -- possibly Oklahoma State -- over the Crimson Tide and into the title game.

“I certainly understand if college football decides there should be two SEC teams playing for the national championship,” Miles said. “It’s a very special conference, very quality teams.”

Miles has been coy about his opinion on whether or not he believes a Crimson Tide team that failed to win its division or its conference should have a second chance at the national title against a team it has already played.

What he would say after Saturday’s game was simple.

Before LSU starts thinking about a national championship game and a possible rematch against Alabama, the Tigers have an SEC title to celebrate.

“I can tell you that they’re a great team,” Miles said. “We’ll look forward to competing well against them. I think I’m going to enjoy my evening first.”
