Marquis Elliot scored 19 points and Dionte Clayborn added 16 more as the Fort Benning Knights obliterated Aflac Team 1, 76-33, Thursday at the Psalmond Road Recreation Center.

The Knights (8-0) had 13 players in the scoring column. Head coach Carl Little said he went into the game wanting to give his bench players more playing time.

“I wanted to see what type of heart my bench had,” Little said. “They showed they can play. I’ve prepared everyone on this team to be able to step in and be able to start at a moment’s notice.”

Little said the extra playing time could benefit the Knights — the schedule will be a little tougher before the team takes off for Christmas break.

Elliot helped the Knights pull away early by scoring nine straight points in the first half that put his team up 40-13. The Knights often scored multiple times within a minute, using their full-court trap defense to create turnovers and quick baskets. Elliot also led the team in steals while Robert Hartfield added four steals.

“We’re a press-and-trap team,” Little said. “We want to put as much pressure as we can on their offense so we can initiate our offense.”

Little said he was concerned about Thursday’s performance because his bench players did not get many opportunities to run set plays — most of the Knights’ 29 second-half points came off turnovers.

The struggles at the free-throw line also continue. Fort Benning hit just 10-of-18 from the foul line, and Little said he would like to see his team pull its free-throw percentage up to 70 percent.

“We’re going to have to play a little better and execute,” he said. “When we play tougher competition … we’re going to have to knock down free throws.”
