Fort Benning begins repairs to fix April tornado damage

Construction is under way to repair three buildings damaged by a tornado this spring at Fort Benning.

Building 5124 and Building 2122, both barracks, and the Warrior Training Center for the National Guard were damaged April 16 when a tornado touched down in the Harmony Church area. The damage was estimated at $2.9 million to buildings that were part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, which moved the Armor School from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning.

How long the construction will take was not available, a public affairs spokesman said Friday.

When the storm struck, Building 5124 was unoccupied. Soldiers assigned to the 316th Cavalry Brigade were assigned to Building 2122.

Most of the damage was cosmetic to the outside of the structures. Building 5124 took the more serious damage with siding ripped away and exposed metal studs. Less damage to Building 2122 occurred with a shattered outside window pane on the building’s third floor and some torn siding.
