Mason decision, and other decisions, looming (updated)

ATHENS - Get ready for a newsy Friday on the Georgia beat.

Georgia is making head coach Mark Richt and "rising seniors" - the terminology it used in a media heads-up - available for a press conference on Friday.

Meanwhile, sophomore quarterback Hutson Mason tweeted late on Thursday night that he has reached a decision on his future. He didn't say what it would be, but he was deferring to UGA on when to release his decision. Feel free to jump to your own conclusion on that. (Note that no news has leaked out, at least yet, about other schools Mason could land at.)

We haven't been told yet which rising seniors will be at the press conference. But we know safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams are coming back, sources have said outside linebacker Cornelius Washington is as well. The two other main guys out there are defensive back Sanders Commings and cornerback Branden Smith.

And on top of all this, tailback recruit Todd Gurley is set to announce his college decision at 2 p.m.

Now here's the part where I'm up front about my Friday: If I'd known all this was going to be happening, I wouldn't have booked a plane flight for 5:30 p.m. from Atlanta. (This is my Christmas trip back to the family in D.C., because I couldn't make it there over the holidays.)

I'm going to do as much as I can on the phone, and will rely on some help from the presser as well. I hate that I can't do more, but it's just one of those things.

In any case, I'll be scrambling to update this space as news develops, and will tweet and re-tweet with equal alacrity. (Yes, I used the word alacrity.)

Here's a quick update as of 11:45 a.m.:

A source says the junior defensive players will announce at the meeting that they're all in school. The one caution is Branden Smith, who informed me that he hasn't made up his mind yet, but that he will be at the press conference and WILL announce a decision at that point.

But it does make me more certain that Sanders Commings, who had been seriously considering it, has decided to stay. And the same source reiterated that Cornelius Washington is staying.

There isn't any further word on Hutson Mason, other than he's supposed to be at the press conference too. Reading into that, it's not normal for a school to call a press conference to say a player is transferring. They just leave.
