Scholastic Books will donate one book to Reach Out and Read, a program that provides books to kids, for every person who creates a Bookprint on their site, You Are What You Read.
A Bookprint consists of five books that made an impression on your life. It's a difficult task to narrow it down to five (here's my list, which is missing one that wasn't on Scholastic's site. I've informed them of the omission and they're looking into it. For inquiring minds, it's "Halls of Fame" by John D'Agata).
It's fun to think about the books that have made an impression on your life ... but also pretty difficult. I don't know about you, but before I made any selections I thought, "What does this selection say about me?" Of course that's an insecure (and insincere) approach and I had to throw it out the window and just pick five books already. It's just a website.
But all my selections are meaningful in some way, even if I didn't get to include a few classics, such as "The Great Gatsby," "Wuthering Heights" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," all of which I love and were at one point on my short list.
The top three listed are "To Kill A Mockingbird," The Bible and the Harry Potter series.
Other top rankings are "Catcher in the Rye," "The Giving Tree" (it was hard for me to discard this one!), "Gone with the Wind" and "Pride and Prejudice."
