Phenix City police are investigating a shooting that killed one man this morning and injured another.

It happened about 2 a.m. in the parking lot of Car-Mart at the corner of 13th Street and the U.S. 280 bypass.

Terry Lamar Simmons, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:32 a.m. Russell County Coroner Arthur L. Sumbry Jr. said Simmons had been shot multiple times.

His body is to be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences lab for an autopsy, Sumbry said. No address for Simmons was immediately available.

A second victim, Richard Dean Prince, 61, was taken to The Medical Center with injuries. His condition was not available.

James Ashley, general manager of Car-Mart, said the victims and a suspect had apparently been drinking at a nearby bar. He said police asked him as soon as he got to work this morning whether he had surveillance cameras.

"I've got the cameras outside the building which showed everything," Ashley said, adding the surveillance footage shows a clear picture of the suspect. "Even the police said it's some of the best security equipment they've seen."

Ashley said the victims were in a vehicle that was hauling a boat. He said he knows Prince personally.

"He's actually come in here several times," Ashley said. "Really nice guy."

Police did not release information about any suspect or other details about the shooting, the city’s first of the new year. The shooting comes as police continue to investigate several unsolved homicides from 2011.
