New tax center opens today at Fort Benning

If you are a soldier, family member or retired veteran and need help with preparing your taxes, the Fort Benning Tax Center opened today on the third floor office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Fort Benning.

The center at 6450 Way Ave. will prepare 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040 forms at no charge and e-file the returns.

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.  Center is closed weekends.

Help with returns is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To use the center, bring your military ID  card, Social Security card and one for dependents, a voided check and all  tax information. You should include all receipts, statements, W-2s, 1098s and 1099s.

Anyone who divorced between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011 should bring a copy of the divorce decree.

Last year, the center saved soldiers, family members and retirees $572,492 in fees to prepare taxes. The center prepared 4,262 federal returns and 3,834 for the state, totaling more than $8.7 million in refunds.
