Pop culture references often pop up in tattoos. But most people think to cartoons, comic books, music and movies inspiring said ink.
But what about books? I surprised myself with my lack of thought on this subject. I'm a fairly avid reader and the amount of time spent with any single book almost necessarily creates a strong connection.
So I really enjoyed reading through this Publisher's Weekly blog post on The 5 Books That Inspire the Most Tattoos.
It's a pretty interesting list (and it also provides link to examples of the art, which is fun to see) and I'm not surprised that Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" comes it at number five though it would be fair to argue it's popularity has as much, if not more, to do with the film adaptation.
To be fair, unless a book has been made into a film, or includes illustrations, it would be hard to have anything but a quote inked into your skin as any images would be almost entirely subjective.
But I'm pretty intrigued by the idea and it got me thinking about what book might inspire me to permanently imprint it on my skin for all to see.
Palahniuk's "Invisible Monsters" is a possibility. There are numerous quotes from Shakespeare that I could see myself enjoy for the rest of my life. And then there's "The Princess Bride."
But that bears the "Fight Club" issue of the popularity of the movie outweighing the book. And my favorite quotes ("This is true love you think this happens everyday?" and "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for awhile." Both Westley. Both sappy.) are attributed to the movie, not the book (I'm at work, without my copy of the book, otherwise I'd double check). I also like the quote, "This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it.
Would you ever get a tattoo inspired by a book? What and why?
