I love dogs so much that I'll stop on the street to greet dogs. Even the big ones.
A friend of mine told me once that I'll have a dog bite my face off one day. I pooh-poohed that. Now, I'm a little more careful. Still, I'll stop and pet them and talk to them and let them lick my face.
But I just have this mental block when it comes to pit bulls. They just scare me. I know it's irrational. They are, for the most part, beautiful, loving dogs.
Then something will happen and a child gets attacked by one. I becomes a big story.
Thank goodness other people don't fear them as much as I do. I'm not really scared -- I'm uneasy around them and they probably sense that.
I've gone up to Chihuahuas, whose owners warn that they bite. So what? What kind of damage can a little dog like that do? Well, my ill-tempered Chihuahua can do some damage. He's drawn blood before and I'm his owner and love him. I don't want anything to happen around other people, so I don't take him out except to take him to the vet or maybe to a groomer to trim his nails. But they are warned and he's got to have a restraint around his little mouth.
Anyway, the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation has given our PAWS Humane a grant to spay or neuter 100 pit bulls free. That's right, if you have a pit bull, you don't have to pay a cent to get the animal spayed or neutered.
But you'd better call fast.
Even though it seems like 100 dogs is a lot, I'm sure the grant money will go fast.
So call 706-565-0035, ext. 203, to make an appointment for your dog.
I've linked the Ware Charitable Foundation website to this story, but it's down for maintenance. You might want to check on it again later.
