Civilian employee dies in Thursday collision at Fort Benning

A vehicle and motorcyle collision at Fort Benning Thursday left a civilian employee dead and a soldier injured on 1st Division Road, post officials said today.

The employee, a motorcycle rider,  was identified as Fred Roberts, a trainer developer with the Directorate of Training and Doctrine. Roberts, 56, was transported by Fort Benning emergency medical services to The Medical Center in Columbus after the 7:15 a.m. accident. He was pronounced dead of injuries at 8:26 a.m. 

 The injured soldier is 20-year-old Pvt. 1st Class Amanda Willey, a lab technician who was treated at Martin Army Community Hospital and later released.

 Officials said Roberts was traveling westbound  alone on the motorcycle on 1st Division Road when he struck Willey's sedan as she attempted to cross the intersection at 1st Cavalry Division Road.

The accident remains under investigation, said Rick Rosado, a public affairs spokesman.
