A second soldier has been arrested in connection with the Saturday wreck that killed a 55-year-old Columbus man, police said.

Kyle Dean Ojeda, 27, was charged Monday afternoon with reckless conduct, open container, furnishing alcohol to a minor and no proof of insurance. Ojeda is also accused of inhaling nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.”

Police say Ojeda was in his 2006 black Ford Explorer driven by Jacob J. Keller, 20, that struck and killed Willie Lawrence about 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Ojeda, a Fort Benning soldier, was riding around with Keller drinking alcohol that Ojeda had provided. Keller was driving east on Buena Vista Road, speeding and swerving through traffic. At one point, Keller drove into oncoming traffic before swerving back into the eastbound lane and colliding with the 1994 maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass Lawrence was in.

That collision led to a five-vehicle wreck at Buena Vista and Floyd roads. Lawrence later died at the hospital, police said.

Keller was charged Sunday with vehicular homicide, police said.

Ojeda told officers he’d given Keller alcohol and that they’d been drinking while riding in the Explorer. Ojeda also said he’d bought and inhaled nitrous oxide, reports state.
