A highly intoxicated man told Columbus police he was robbed Monday night, though he refused to prosecute the suspect, reports state.

Police say a 27-year-old man contacted police at 8:35 p.m. about the robbery that happened at a 12th Avenue home that night. The man appeared very drunk and was unable to speak coherently.

Based on the man’s description, the officer determined that the victim had been at his uncle’s home drinking alcohol with friends. At some point, the suspect approached the drunk man with a gun, hit him and took $600 and a cell phone, reports state.

“(The victim) stated that would have defended himself, but he didn’t want to go to jail,” police said.

Police say the intoxicated man was hostile during his interview with police, claiming authorities wouldn’t follow through on his report. He then said he wouldn’t prosecute and left with a family member.
