The discovery of a child’s skull in Opelika, Ala., last week has led to a homicide investigation, reports state.

The skull was found Jan. 28 by a resident of Brook Haven Trailer Park — a discovery that led authorities to cordon off the area. Their search led to more bones on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, when more human remains were found about 50 to 75 feet from where the skull was found, police said.

Preliminary results of the remains indicate that the person, likely a child younger than 10, died “by homicidal means.” Police said Tuesday that they are now investigating the death as a homicide, reports state.

The race, gender and cause of death of the person are unknown, police said.
