Four Bi-City wrestlers won state championships Saturday, two in Alabama and two in Georgia.
Central-Phenix Citys Luke Wilson won his title in the 220-pound weight class in Class 6A, while Tim Hester won his at 170 in 6A. Both finished the season undefeated.
In Georgia, Jordans David Sobasky won the state championship at 113 in Class AA, and Chattahoochee Countys Preston Steen won at 138 in Class A.
Three Bi-City wrestlers finished as runners-up, losing in their title matches. They are Russell Countys Joshua Jamieson, Hardaways James Triplett and Harris Countys James Ellison.
Wilson beat Ryan Stenger of Bob Jones High 5-4. It is the Red Devils first state championship since the wrestling program was restarted in 2006 after a 36-year absence.
This will boost it up, Wilson said of the effect the win will have on the program. People will start believing in coach (Greg) Jeffcoat.
Wilson, who ended the year 55-0, had to stage a huge rally as he fell behind 4-0 in the first period. But Wilson got a reversal before the end of the period and trailed 4-2.
He took the lead in the second period with an escape and a takedown.
Its awesome, said Wilson, who finished as a runner-up in 2011. It didnt really hit me until I got off the podium. It is an awesome feeling.
Hester (57-0) won the Panthers first state wrestling championship since Tommy Sanders started the program a decade ago.
He won his match in opposite fashion to Wilson. Hester took down Marcus Elkins of Hewitt-Trussville twice in the opening period and led 4-1.
Hester, who finished fourth last year, put the match away by taking a 9-3 lead after two. He was penalized twice for stalling in the final period.
All season, this is what I was working for, Hester said. When I got those points, I got a little cotton mouth. (Going into the third period) I knew I was going to win.
Sobasky, who came in sixth as a sophomore and fifth as a junior, pinned Jeffersons Kyle Kashuba, the top seed, in 4:51 to win in Class AAs 113-pound class.
Sobasky won three of his four matches with pins.
Steen (53-8) beat Gordon Lees Cory Almond 5-1 in overtime to win the Class A 138 weight class.
He didnt want to wrestle, Steen said. He was content to back up off the mat.
Steen won a title in the first year for the Chattahoochee County program under coach Ed Lovvorn, who restarted the program after the school failed to field a team in 2011.
I hope it is a big motivator for our kids, Lovvorn said. Hopefully, it will get more interest in the long-term success.
In Fridays semifinal, Steen beat two-time defending state champion Ryne Eriquezzo of Bremen.
