Congrats to the Snakes for accomplishing something that's very hard to do. Don't care how good one team is or how awful another is, it's really tough to sweep a season series. With their 7-4 road win over Huntsville, the Snakes took the season series 6-0.
Actually, it's two sweeps in a row...playoff series last season and now six straight during 2011-12 and the Cottonmouths now own 8 consecutive wins over Huntsville. Wow.
Also, the Snakes scored a season-high 7 goals in a pretty bizarre game. For a while, it looked like it was going to be 10-1, but Huntsville came roaring back early in the third period to make a game of it.
Give the Snakes credit. They could've panicked at several key moments of the game, but they didn't. They kept plugging away and answered every late Havoc goal with one of their own.
Before we go any further...the 6:42 return of Levi Lind. I didn't see the boarding clearly. The Huntsville announcer gave us no details. But a five-minute major and a gamer? Yikes. The ref must have thought it pretty flagrant. I know Levi must be disappointed. I'll find out tomorrow when he and I sit down for a story set to run on Friday.
Mark Sibbald took the loss in net for Huntsville, his third straight since rejoining the team. Another strange situation. Sibbald was booted off the team, according to coach Randy Murphy, because the rest of the players wanted him gone. Huh? What changed and who ate humble pie, I have no idea, but it's not working real well so far. Of course, there's more to winning games than goaltending.
The thing that aggravated me is that Sibbald took out his frustrations on...Pete MacDougall? No. How about Mitch Wall? No. Well, Daniel Amesbury was at home, finishing his suspension. Sooooo, Sibbald decided to mess with Orrin Hergott. How ridiculous is that? First of all, Orrin is smaller than him. Well, not by much. Secondly, Orrin can deliver a hit with the best of them, and he certainly will drive the net when he's trying to score, but come on, Sibbald. Doesn't your team have bigger problems than Orrin Hergott??(no pun intended!)
Brett Hammond sat out this game. Jerome indicated to me that, until Sam Bowles returns and he has to make a move, he'd rest guys who were banged up. You remember that Brett missed a couple of games while nursing an injury. I'm sure he hated missing this one, but could use the rest.
Those of you who check out the stars of the game...may want to skip it tonight. I can feel my friend Bob Wilkeson cringing at the Huntsville selections tonight. They make a mockery of the system. If you're going to have stars of the game, shouldn't they have some actual relevance to the game?
First star: Pete MacDougall. No offense to Pete, but he had one goal. It was a neat goal, but how do you overlook four different Snakes who had multi-point games? Greg Beller, Orrin, Derek Pallardy and Jordan Braid were all great candidates.
They chose two stars from their own team. Stefan had two goals. No problem if he'd gotten third star. (He got second). Third star went to Lafrance, who had two assists. So you've just gotten thumped and you "honor" two of your own players?
Time to head to Pensacola on Friday. The Snakes are NOT going for a season sweep against the IceFlyers...:)
Stay tuned.
